Manchester United midfielder Jack Fletcher has received a significant ban for using a discriminatory word.

Fletcher, son of United legend Darren Fletcher, has made three senior appearances for the Red Devils after making his first-team debut in the club’s Premier League defeat at Aston Villa in December.

However, the promising 18-year-old talent will not be part of United’s matchday squad to face Newcastle United on Wednesday night.

Jack Fletcher charged by FA

Jack Fletcher has received a six-match ban and a fine for using a discriminatory word during an EFL Trophy match last year.

Fletcher was shown a red card in the 62nd minute of a 5-2 EFL Trophy defeat by Barnsley in October following a heated exchange with one of their players.

It has now emerged that Fletcher used a homophobic slur, which has resulted in him receiving a six-match ban.

The academy product has accepted the FA charge for breaching rules by “using insulting words including a reference, whether express or implied, to sexual orientation.”

It is believed referee Will Davis was one yard away from the Manchester United player when he heard him use the offensive term.

Fletcher has apologised for his language, stating: “I am truly sorry for the offensive word that I used in the heat of the moment. Despite the fact that I had no intention to use the term as a homophobic insult, I completely understand that such language is unacceptable and immediately apologised after the game. I want to be clear that this momentary lapse of character absolutely does not reflect my beliefs or values.”

Sir Jim Ratcliffe receives backlash for his comments

It has been a challenging few weeks for Manchester United regarding their stance on social issues.

Recently, their co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe came under scrutiny after saying in an interview with Sky News that the UK had been “colonised by immigrants” who were “costing too much money.”

Ratcliffe avoided an FA charge, but he was criticised by figures including Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham. The billionaire eventually offered an apology.

Most importantly, a section of United fans made their thoughts clear about Ratcliffe’s comments through a visible message during the club’s match against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford. They displayed a banner which read, “MUFC proudly colonised by immigrants.”
