The United States' 4-1 win over Paraguay in their World Cup opener drew 24.9 million TV viewers nationwide, setting a record and outstripping any NBA Finals audience reported so far.
According to L'Équipe, the combined English and Spanish broadcasts on Fox Sports and Telemundo delivered that total. The tournament is being staged on American soil for the first time since 1994.
With figures for Game 5 not yet released, the highest NBA Finals audience to date was 23.8 million for Game 3 between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs. The United States' win exceeded that mark.
The match also drew 70,492 supporters to SoFi Stadium.
It is the most watched World Cup group-stage match in US television history. On Fox Sports, viewership rose 106% compared with the United States' group games at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
