Palmeiras’ 2-1 win over Fluminense on Wednesday at Arena Crefisa Barueri featured an unusual moment, as the hosts took kick-off in both halves.
According to Globo.com, Palmeiras began the match with the ball and, after the interval, Fluminense should have restarted play, yet the home side took the second-half kick-off as well.
After the match, Carlos Miguel was asked about the incident and appeared surprised. The number one said he had not noticed.
IFAB’s law book, available in Portuguese on the CBF website, states that the team choosing which end to attack in the first half takes the second-half kick-off.
The only specific sanction applies if the taker touches the ball again before another player, which leads to an indirect free-kick. For any other procedural infringement, the law states the kick-off should be retaken.
