Dayot Upamecano has been on the Säbener Straße agenda for months, but now there are growing signs that he will stay for the long term – and one key reason is becoming increasingly clear.

There is growing optimism at FC Bayern that the 27-year-old centre-back can be tied to the club beyond the current season. After the BBC had already reported on advanced talks, Sport BILD is now also reporting that a contract extension is becoming increasingly likely. What is striking is that financial aspects do not appear to be playing a central role in the talks. Instead, other factors are convincing.

According to the report, Upamecano’s relationship with head coach Vincent Kompany is the decisive factor in his decision. The Frenchman feels that he is in good hands with the Belgian, both on a sporting and personal level, and is keen to continue working with him. According to the report, the relationship of trust with the coach is the decisive reason for his willingness to extend his contract.

Schlotterbeck and Co. no longer an issue?

In sporting terms, Upamecano has clearly established himself since Kompany’s arrival. While his game was previously characterised by uncertainties, these have now become the exception. Especially in important games, he has shown mostly convincing performances recently. Those responsible see him as an integral part for the coming years.

The plans at Säbener Straße already reflect this. According to Sport BILD, other transfer options are likely to be put on the back burner should an extension be signed. The names Ibrahima Konaté, Nico Schlotterbeck and Marc Guehi, both previously under discussion, would become less important in this case. With Upamecano, Minjae Kim, Jonathan Tah and also Hiroki Ito and Josip Stanisic, the club would see itself adequately staffed in central defence. However, the future of Kim is still unclear. Should he leave the club, Bayern could again look at one of the central defenders.

The talks have yet to be finalized, but the direction is clear. Upamecano is leaning towards staying in Munich, and this decision would be a clear signal of stability for FC Bayern.
