Spain’s run to the World Cup semi-finals will reshape LaLiga EA Sports’ opening weekend, and any delay to Valencia-Betis now depends on Betis after Argentina progressed past Switzerland.
According to Superdeporte, the AFE agreement guarantees a minimum three weeks’ rest, and LaLiga planned to split matchday one so affected players also get three weeks’ preparation.
With Spain and France in the last four, three fixtures will move: Real Sociedad vs Real Madrid, Barcelona vs Athletic Club and Atlético Madrid vs Málaga.
A delay at Mestalla looks less likely, yet Betis could request it for Giovani Lo Celso. The 18-19 July finish leaves too few days before 14-16 August to grant his three weeks off. He has played 60 minutes, against Jordan in the group stage.
In Seville, that quarter-final effectively decided who could seek a delay. Had Switzerland advanced, Sevilla could have done so with Rubén Vargas and Djibril Sow.
Clubs have approved this flexibility for matchday one. Celta, with Borja Iglesias, could add a fourth change if they ask, and Valencia-Betis would be the fifth if Betis proceed. Other potential triggers have faded as Thomas Meunier, Fidalgo and ‘Cucho’ Hernández went out.
