Valencia return on Thursday in the Copa del Rey last 16 at Burgos, aiming for the quarter-finals while mindful of their league struggles.

According to Superdeporte, left-back José Luis Gayà and centre-back César Tárrega missed Tuesday’s group session in Paterna with minor issues, and with two days to go all indications are they will be rested so they can be at 100 percent for Sunday’s trip to Getafe at 14:00.

Both worked in the gym as the squad resumed training after a Monday off, granted following another draw against Elche on matchday 19.

The injured Thierry Rendall, Julen Agirrezabala and Mouctar Diakhaby were also absent, each dealing with hamstring problems. Diakhaby has required surgery and faces a more serious lay-off, with all three continuing their recovery in Paterna.

Carlos Corberán led the session with four academy players involved, goalkeeper Vicent Abril and defenders Rubén Iranzo, Joel Fontanet and Alejandro Panach. The cup tie could offer minutes to fringe players and a standout from the B team.

Burgos, one of five Segunda sides still in the competition, host at El Plantío on Thursday at 21:00. Valencia’s final training session is scheduled for Wednesday.
