The ongoing exchange between Barcelona’s young sensation Lamine Yamal and former Real Madrid midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has turned into a spectacle that continues to amuse fans.
What initially started as a simple criticism has now evolved into a public feud, keeping football enthusiasts entertained.
Van der Vaart, who previously took aim at Yamal with critical remarks, had a chance to move on from the controversy.
Instead, he reignited the discussion, although he did acknowledge the undeniable talent of the La Masia prodigy.
The Dutchman’s latest comments followed Yamal’s brilliant goal against the Netherlands, which he admitted was of the highest quality.
He praised the Barcelona forward, calling him a world-class player before slipping in another remark about the young star’s reaction to criticism.

The former Netherlands international made a self-deprecating remark, suggesting that Yamal should not be too concerned about what an “overweight former player” says about him.
“The goal he scored was of great quality. Still, I would advise him not to worry so much about a former player who is too fat and says something about him. That doesn’t matter at all,” he said as quoted by SPORT.
This back-and-forth began after Spain’s victory over the Netherlands in Rotterdam, where Van der Vaart questioned Yamal’s attitude on the pitch.
He criticised the teenager’s body language, suggesting that he did not seem fully engaged in the match.
Yamal did not let those comments slide and swiftly responded on Instagram, pointing out that despite his perceived flaws, he had scored a goal, missed a penalty, and helped Spain secure a spot in the Nations League semi-finals.
With Van der Vaart’s most recent lighthearted response, the debate appears to have reached its conclusion. However, given how quickly the football world moves, it would not be surprising if this verbal sparring continues in the future.
