Virgil van Dijk has denied that Liverpool underestimated Manchester United after being held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield.

Arne Slot’s side dropped points in the Premier League title race after a gripping game between the North West rivals on Sunday.

Amad Diallo’s late equaliser earned a point for a spirited Manchester United side, who had taken the lead early in the second half through Lisandro Martinez’s thunderous finish. Liverpool responded to turn the game around, as Cody Gakpo levelled before Mohamed Salah’s penalty completed the comeback.

However, the Reds looked vulnerable defensively with Ibrahima Konate and Trent Alexander-Arnold struggling. United netted a deserved equaliser 10 minutes from time when Amad Diallo swept in from Alejandro Garnacho’s cross. The visitors then missed a huge chance to take the points when Harry Maguire blazed over from Joshua Zirkzee’s centre.

Liverpool headed into the contest as strong favourites against a Manchester United side who had lost four consecutive games before the trip to Merseyside. However, Van Dijk has denied any suggestion that the Reds underestimated Ruben Amorim’s team.

“That’s all the media. Media talk. It’s nothing to do with us. We prepared for a very tough game like we have seen today. We didn’t think any of that,” Van Dijk said speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live.

“It could have been a lot worse if we are absolutely honest with ourselves,” the Dutch defender reflected on the performance.

“They had a big chance in the end that could have been a lot worse than where we are now. I’m definitely disappointed with dropping points at home but it is what is and we have to move on and we will.

“We found the 2-1 and then it is about trying to manage the game and keep the ball for longer than three and four passes. We lost the ball too easily at times and then we were more open than we should have been. We’re not perfect, we’re still learning and we have to learn from this as well.”
