Virgil van Dijk, whose contract with Liverpool expires in June 2025, would like to sign a two-year contract and stay at the club until the 2026 World Cup.

Back in April of this year, it was claimed that Borussia Dortmund were interested in Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk. In addition to the German side, clubs in Turkey, England and the Netherlands were also interested in the defender.

However, his decision is final. Despite interest from the Saudi Pro League, he made it clear that he had no intention of leaving and expressed his desire to stay and continue his journey under his new manager, Arne Slot.

Thoughts of Both Sides

In his latest interview, speaking to The Mirror, he said:

‘At both teams I am still Virgil van Dijk, the big leader! And I certainly want to remain that for the next two years.’

Last month, speaking to Sky Sports, Liverpool manager Arne Slot said of Virgil Van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, and Trent Alexander Arnold, who are all out of contract at the end of the season:

‘If they perform really well, it is up to them if they want to sign a contract or not, then it is up to us if we want to give them a new contract.’

Virgil van Dijk, who has become an undisputed icon at the Anfield club over the past few years, is out of contract at the end of the current season, prompting speculation about the 33-year-old defender’s future.

He has been at Liverpool since 2018 when he moved from Southampton for a then shocking €84.65 million. Since then, under Jürgen Klopp, he has won:

  • Champions League (2018/19)
  • Premier League (2019/20)
  • UEFA Super Cup (2019/20)
  • FIFA Club World Cup (2020)
  • English FA Cup (2022)
  • English Super Cup (2022/23)
  • English League Cup (2022, 2024)

In total, during these years, the 33-year-old captain played 273 games for the Premier League club, scoring 23 goals and providing 12 assists. He was also UEFA Best Player in Europe in 2019, Player of the Year (2018/19) and TM-Player of the Season (2019).
