Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk is reportedly upset about losing long-time defensive partner Ibrahima Konate, who is expected to leave Anfield when his contract expires.
According to the Daily Mail, the Liverpool captain feels ‘like he is holding together a sinking ship as players leave left, right and centre’.
Joe Gomez, Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah are also leaving as Liverpool revamp their squad following a dismal season.
Jeremy Jacquet is joining the club this summer, while Giovanni Leoni is returning from a long-term injury, but questions remain about whether they are ready.
The Reds need a ready-made defender to take the reins from Van Dijk and replace Konate and Gomez.
Unfortunately, there is no easy way to watch the spine of a title-winning side break apart for a leader such as Van Dijk, who has carried Liverpool through many defining moments.
But the reality is that change is desperately needed. Liverpool’s woeful league title defence exposed a squad that had grown stale in key areas.
As painful as these departures may feel, they are part of the natural cycle every elite side eventually faces.
The challenge for the ‘outstanding‘ Van Dijk now is not to dwell on the players leaving but to guide the next generation through a difficult transition period.
Liverpool still have quality, experience and ambition, but rebuilding requires patience and strong leadership inside the dressing room.
More responsibility will now fall on Van Dijk’s shoulders, both on and off the pitch.
However, it is debatable whether the Dutch international is up to the task given that he has declined over the past two years.
