Leeds United were hit by two rapid VAR calls, first losing a Joe Rodon header to offside before Ethan Ampadu was penalised for handball to give Sunderland a spot-kick.

According to Leeds Live, home supporters were already angry in the first half when Luke O'Nien dragged Pascal Struijk down at a set-piece in the visitors' box, yet no penalty was awarded.

After the break, Daniel Farke's side thought they had gone ahead when Anton Stach's free-kick was powered in by Rodon. The ball struck the bar and bounced over the line as Melker Ellborg failed to deal with the delivery, but following protests and a review the goal was ruled out for offside.

Around three minutes later, Wilson Isidor's mishit effort struck Ampadu's arm inside the area. Referee Stuart Attwell initially waved play on, then after a monitor check overturned his decision and awarded a penalty for deliberate handball against Leeds' number four.

Habib Diarra converted from 12 yards, with Karl Darlow getting a strong hand to the strike but unable to keep it out.
