Vasco paid tribute to Geovani before Sunday’s meeting with Bragantino at São Januário, days after the former midfielder died on Monday aged 62. The "Pequeno Príncipe" scored 50 goals in 408 appearances for the club across three spells.

According to Globo.com, the social stand unveiled a special mosaic for the club great before kick-off, and a tribute video played on the stadium screen.

Players took the field wearing a commemorative patch. The match pennant, corner flags and the captain’s armband also carried nods to the former playmaker.

The wake was held on Tuesday in Vila Velha, his birthplace, with family, friends, former players and supporters gathering at the Igreja Maranata da Praia da Costa.

Geovani came through at Desportiva, then joined Vasco in the youth ranks in the early 1980s. He was part of state title wins in 1982, 1987, 1988, 1992 and 1993.

For Brazil, he was in the Copa América winning squad in 1989 and captained the side that won silver at the 1988 Olympics alongside Bebeto and Romário. He had previously represented the national youth teams.
