‘Very important’ – Szczęsny names first Barcelona star who contacted him over joining | OneFootball

New Barcelona signing Wojciech Szczęsny has on Wednesday provided an insight into the efforts of one member of Hansi Flick’s squad to convince him to join the club.

The name of goalkeeper Szczęsny has of course taken its place front and centre in the headlines across all of Spain over the last couple of hours.

This comes after confirmation was forthcoming that the Pole has officially stepped out of retirement, to join Barcelona.

After he was contacted over a potential joining of forces in the aftermath of the long-term injury suffered by Marc-André ter Stegen, Szczęsny today penned terms with the Blaugrana through the close of the campaign.

A short time ago, the 34-year-old, in turn, held his first interview as a Barca player.

And, during as much, ‘Tek’ admitted that one of his new teammates played an ‘important role’ in convincing him to make the move to Catalunya’s capital.

In quotes cited by Mundo Deportivo, the former Arsenal and Juventus shot-stopper pointed towards compatriot Robert Lewandowski as the player in question:

“He was the first person who called me to look into the possibility of this happening because I was retired. At first I wasn’t ready for new challenges but I spoke to my family and friends and they all told me it would be a mistake not to accept this. That’s why Robert played a very important role because he was the person who had the idea to convince me.”
