The presidential elections at Barcelona have created a tense atmosphere around the club, and the campaign reached another dramatic moment when candidate Victor Font openly criticised current president Joan Laporta.

Font spoke to the media shortly before casting his vote at the Spotify Camp Nou polling station.

His comments were directed at Laporta after images circulated showing the president alongside former Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets and Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati during election day.

The photographs quickly became a talking point among members and supporters, with many interpreting them as a show of support for Laporta from prominent figures connected to the club.

Personal relationships

Font, however, dismissed that interpretation and suggested the images were being used to create a misleading narrative during the election process.

While addressing the situation, he pointed to the personal relationships that exist between many people connected to Barcelona.

“These are personal relationships. In this case, with his former brother-in-law, Alejandro Echevarria, they’re trying to create confusion.”

Font continued by explaining that he also shares connections with figures linked to the club but has deliberately avoided using those relationships as part of his campaign strategy.

“I have a personal relationship with Sergio Busquets. Many people on the team have a relationship with Sergio Busquets

“Carles Puyol’s best friend is part of our team, but we haven’t gone out looking for people to take photos with and confuse the public,” he added.

Not FC Laporta

Font then argued that Barcelona should not be defined by divisions or personal alliances.

He emphasised that the club belongs to its members rather than any individual leader.

“This is FC Barcelona, not FC Laporta, and starting Monday, these people will be delighted to have a new board of directors, and we’ll all work together.

“We won’t play this game of ‘these guys are with me’ and ‘the others are against me and ‘Messi is bad, and Xavi is bad.’

“This is Barça, unfortunately, today, but starting tomorrow, it will no longer be that way,” he said.

Despite the tense atmosphere surrounding the campaign, Font appeared confident about the outcome of the vote.

When asked about his expectations for the election results, he expressed a strong belief that his project would receive support from the club’s members.

“This smells like victory,” he said.
