Brazilian player Alexandre Souza collapsed after seizure during state league match causing panic at Maracana Stadium.
A frightening incident shocked fans during a Campeonato Carioca match between Sampaio Corrêa & Flamengo at the Maracanã Stadium.
Brazilian midfielder Alexandre Souza aged 26 suddenly collapsed on the pitch just eight minute into the game after suffering seizure.
The rare and alarming scene led to immediate stoppage as medical teams rushed onto the field.
Players & staff reacted with clear concern. Television footage showed one of Souza’s teammates removing his shirt to help cool him down while waiting for medical assistance.
An ambulance was called quickly and entered the pitch as fans watched in silence.
Souza was conscious while being taken off the field and received applause from the crowd as he was transported to hospital.
However reports confirmed that he suffered another seizure shortly after arriving which required doctors to keep him under close medical observation for at least 24 hour.
The incident raised further concern because it came one year after Souza survived serious motorcycle accident, an event that nearly cost him his life.
In official statement released on Monday, Sampaio Corrêa confirmed that medical tests ruled out any damage to the heart or nervous system.
The club reassured supporters that the player’s condition is stable and that he remains under medical care as precaution.
The match was part of the Campeonato Carioca, the top professional football competition in Rio de Janeiro state. Despite the serious incident, the game eventually continued and ended in a 7-1 win for Flamengo.
