Chelsea confirmed the signing of Liam Delap this week, and right away there was a little bit of controversy sparked.
Delap has been a key player for Lee Carsley’s under 21 team in recent years, but he will not be going to the U21 Euros this summer after Chelsea asked him to withdraw so he can feature for them at the Club World Cup.

Asked about this in his press conference this afternoon, Carsley took a good perspective on the whole thing:
“I’m definitely not disappointed, I’m delighted for Liam and his family, I think it’s a brilliant thing for an English centre forward to play in the Premier League at such a prestigious club like Chelsea, hopefully he will do really well there and push for the senior team and we’ll move on,” Carsley said.
“I think we’ve always known that 2 or 3 of the players could move to clubs playing in the Club World Cup and we’ve been preparing this for a while.”

That is the right attitude for sure. We supposed that under 21 managers have to accept that they’ll always being losing players who do well, either to the senior team or in circumstances like this.
Ultimately the age group teams are there to feed the seniors, and the best move for Delap’s career (and therefore England’s senior team) is to play for Chelsea this month and try to hit the ground running next season with some games under his belt.
This is more serious than some friendlies in Malaysia or whatever major clubs usually do in the summer, which makes Delap’s decision even more understandable.
