We are huge Trevoh Chalobah fans here at Chelsea news – not only is he a Cobham boy, he’s also a quality defender. He was our best centre back last season, and since returning from a successful loan at Crystal Palace in January he’s once again seemingly become first choice – at least while Wesley Fofana is out with his latest injury.

But he’s not universally appreciated, even among Chelsea fans. There are plenty who would rather than an expensive wonderkid import in that position alongside Levi Colwill. But yesterday the 25 year old was great, and even some of his haters had to hold their hands up:

“Trevoh Chalobah I’m highly critical of you but your game today did not go unnoticed,” one Twitter user wrote.

“Some of those touches into space to break the press were just beautiful. Tremendous work in a moment when a lot of the fanbase were getting ready to pounce on him.”

The user then picked out 3 perfect examples of just what he was talking about, which you can see in the clips embedded here:

It’s something that anyone who has played football at any level will be familiar with – the touch to move the ball even if your intention is to pass it. It changes the angle ahead of you, making space where there wasn’t any, and creating new angles to play the ball forwards.

If you don’t have defenders who do that, it’s very difficult to progress the ball up the pitch. If they receive the ball and pass it without moving, usually their only options are sideways or backwards. These little shifts of just a few steps before hitting the pass are a subtle but vital part of moving the shape of the game ahead of you to allow more aggressive passes.
