Manchester United’s record in front of goal this season has been abysmal as their eight goals in nine games is the second-lowest in the Premier League this season.

Their defeat to West Ham last weekend, which left the Red Devils in 14th position in the Premier League, signalled the end of Erik ten Hag’s reign with Ruud van Nistelrooy placed in interim charge.

The 20-time English league champions did respond in spectacular fashion as they thrashed Leicester City 5-2 in the Carabao Cup, but the form of summer signing Joshua Zirkzee is a concern.

The summer signing has impressed with his link-up play but he lacks the killer instinct upfront while it would be unwise to put too much pressure on Rasmus Hojlund who is still only 21.

Goalscoring woes

Ruben Amorim is set to take over from November 11 and the Portuguese will be tasked with helping the team climb back up the table and fix this goalscoring issue.

The Old Trafford side have been linked with a plethora of strikers and the Portuguese’s arrival might help the club in their pursuit of Viktor Gyökeres.

The Swedish hitman has 20 goals in 16 appearances this season for Sporting Lisbon while last term, he netted 43 times and he helped the club to the league title.

His agent has spoken out about the striker’s fondness for Amorim and rumour mills are abuzz with reports that United could pip the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City in the race.

Gyokeres on United links

Naturally, the Sweden international was asked about these growing links and the 26-year-old told Sport TV (via 90min), “I don’t know. I’m here, and I really like being here. It’s not something I think about. I’m enjoying it here.”

On the impending departure of Amorim, the former Coventry City revealed that it was sad to see him go but the players wished him the best and they will continue to do their job.

“We are sad to see [Amorim] leave; he is a great professional; he was fantastic for us, but we have to adapt. It’s difficult to talk about the future, but we will definitely do the same job and continue to give our best. We wish him the best. It’s very good for him.”

Fans are excited to see Amorim’s United team in action and it will be intriguing to see which players INEOS brings in for the Portuguese boss.
