Nicolas Pepe struck the winner for Ivory Coast against Scotland as Villarreal’s internationals returned from the final break before next summer’s World Cup.
El Periódico Mediterráneo reports that several Villarreal players experienced contrasting windows. Pepe, who had not scored for his country since October 2024, reinforced his case after missing the Africa Cup of Nations and continued his strong club form.
Pepe enjoys a close understanding with Georges Mikautadze, with both having played in France, and both troubling backlines. Mikautadze is back with Marcelino preparing for Monday’s trip to Girona, having nine league goals and aiming for a strong finish in his first season in yellow.
Tajon Buchanan was sent off on his first Canada friendly, a 2-2 draw with Iceland. Tani Oluwaseyi sat out the opener but featured against Tunisia, unable to score in a 0-0 draw.
Pape Gueye played 67 minutes in Senegal’s 2-0 win over Peru in Paris, then celebrated with a lap of honour and the AFCON trophy. He did not feature against Gambia, 3-1, as he was rested.
Portugal drew 0-0 with Mexico then won 2-0 against the United States, with Renato Veiga starting the first game and playing 21 minutes in the second. He faced Alex Freeman, the young full-back who played 79 minutes.
Thomas Partey logged 86 minutes in Ghana’s heavy defeat to Austria, then completed the full match in a narrow loss to Germany. Villarreal’s internationals are now back.
