Brian Barry-Murphy's future at Cardiff City has become the subject of speculation

Cardiff City suffered the ignominy of relegation from the Championship last year, ending a 22-year stint in the top two divisions of English football.

But the appointment of Brian Barry-Murphy last summer proved a smart move by owner Vincent Tan.

The Welsh outfit were able to secure promotion from League One at the first attempt, finishing second in the table behind Lincoln City.

The Bluebirds accumulated 91 points, 14 more than third place Stockport County, to comfortably return to the second division.

Supporters will be optimistic that the club have gotten back onto the right track after the disappointment of coming 24th in the Championship last year.

But it could prove a tense summer ahead for Cardiff as teams start to circle around key figures at the Cardiff City Stadium following their promotion success.

Vincent Tan will be worried by Burnley update

It has been reported by journalist Ben Jacobs that Barry-Murphy has emerged as a contender for the Burnley vacancy following Scott Parker’s dismissal.

The Clarets suffered relegation to the Championship this season, and relieved the 45-year-old of his duties following confirmation of their place in the Premier League’s bottom three.

This has led to speculation over who will take over the team, with the Cardiff boss now in the frame for the role.

Supporters, as well as owner Tan, will be concerned about the possibility of losing the Irishman after the impressive work he’s done in year one of his stint at the club.

The 47-year-old made his return to management in 2025 after a stint at underage level with Manchester City, where he earned a reputation for developing young talent.

He enhanced that reputation even further with his record with the Bluebirds, where he guided a team filled with younger talent to a top two finish in League One.

Five players under the age of 20 were given a chance in the team, including debuts for Paul Moreno, Rob Tankiewicz, Noah Williams and Dakarai Mafico.

Ronan Kpalko was also entrusted with a major role in the team, as he made 33 appearances in the league this season, contributing two goals and six assists.

Barry-Murphy’s trust in youth is a highly admirable trait in a coach, and has ensured he is a favourite among the fans.

But he has also introduced an attractive style of football that supporters have enjoyed watching this season, with Cardiff scoring more goals than any other side in the division with a tally of 90.

Cardiff shouldn’t be shocked by Brian Barry-Murphy interest

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to the club that Barry-Murphy is now garnering this level of interest after his impressive first season in charge at Cardiff.

The 47-year-old’s work has earned a lot of attention, and his experience in gaining promotion has now shown the wider world what his methods can achieve.

He could prove to be a very shrewd appointment by Burnley, who will no doubt be hoping to compete for promotion to the Premier League in 2027.

It would be a massive blow for Cardiff to lose him, as it would be a real setback for the development of their younger talent.

Barry-Murphy would be a difficult coach to replace, and Tan’s track record hasn’t always been the most inspiring in that regard.

Cardiff will be hoping that Burnley set their sights on alternative targets, with the likes of Steven Gerrard and John Eustace also mentioned.

While the Bluebirds will be looking to bolster their squad over the summer, Tan’s top priority right now must be to ensure Barry-Murphy remains in charge for the start of the next campaign.
