Bologna manager Vincenzo Italiano delivered his verdict on a fateful 2-1 home defeat to Lille in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League clash. During his post-game interview via Sky Sports, Italiano admitted Bologna’s wastefulness in the final third accelerated their downfall at Stadio Renato Dall’Ara.

“The trouble in the Champions League is that games are won and lost on details, so you risk defeat with the slightest issue, and that is what happened to us tonight,” the Bologna boss said. “In all five matches, we played well, but then lost due to details either with our finishing or in defence. You cannot afford those errors at this level, you will be punished.”

“We will now go home and try to prepare for the game with Venezia. That is on Saturday, so we don’t have time to work on these details in training and the team is not accustomed to that sort of schedule. I do feel we can improve and whittle down a few of these defects that are costing us dearly,” Italiano concluded.

\Bologna saw Thijs Dalinga’s early opener disallowed for offside before slipping to a halftime deficit late in the first half. Though Jhon Lucumi canceled Ngal’Ayel Mukau’s opener early in the first half, the French visitors grabbed a winner in the 66th minute.

Despite netting their first goal in this season’s Champions League, Bologna’s chances of securing knockout qualification are dead in the water. With just one point from five matches, Bologna languish in 33rd in the 36-team table.
