Santos left-back Vinicius Lira has suffered a complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, the club confirmed on Monday, and he is unlikely to play again this season.

He came off during Sunday’s derby against Corinthians with pain in the area, and subsequent tests revealed the extent of the damage.

Lira will undergo surgery in the coming days.

Santos have informed the CBF because the left-back had been called up to the Brazil under-20 squad for the next FIFA window.

Without Lira, head coach Juan Pablo Vojvoda has only Gonzalo Escobar as a specialist left-back, with Barreal also able to cover the role.

The club could instead promote Rafael Gonzaga from the academy, or use João Ananias out of position, an academy product currently training with the first team.
