Vojvoda explains Bontempo substitution in Santos' 2-1 defeat to Athletico-PR | OneFootball

Santos lost 2-1 to Athletico-PR on Thursday at Arena da Baixada in the third round of the Brasileirão. According to Diario Do Peixe, head coach Juan Pablo Vojvoda said Gabriel Bontempo was withdrawn for physical reasons.

He cited cramps and a drop in the midfielder’s output, adding that Miguelito had less influence after the break than in the first half. The pair were among the first changes, with Moisés and Barreal introduced around the 20 to 25 minute mark. Vojvoda said the switches were made to improve the team and he felt they did, stressing it was not a criticism of the players who came on.

Before coming off, Bontempo had been among Santos’ standouts alongside Miguelito, particularly in the first half when the side controlled midfield more effectively.

Bontempo had not started games since Vojvoda’s arrival in September 2025, and this was his second consecutive start.

Despite a competitive showing, Santos again conceded in decisive moments, a theme of their early league campaign. They have one point from three matches and are still seeking a first victory.

Attention now turns to the Campeonato Paulista, with Velo Clube visiting Vila Belmiro on Sunday 15 at 20:30 in the final round of the first phase. Santos must win and still rely on other results to advance.
