Walsall assistant Terry Connor will take a short break from his duties, with former Birmingham City player Michael Johnson drafted in on a temporary basis.
The club said in a statement that Connor will be away for a short period before returning to the dugout, and that Johnson has joined Darren Byfield’s staff with immediate effect.
Johnson is set to be alongside interim head coach Byfield when Walsall host Gillingham on Good Friday.
Connor, 61, replaced Gary Waddock as assistant head coach last month after Waddock left to manage National League side Wealdstone. Earlier in the season, Connor also filled in while Waddock underwent ankle surgery.
Johnson made 262 appearances across eight years with Birmingham, scoring 12 goals and reaching the 2001 League Cup final. He also played for Derby County, Notts County and Sheffield Wednesday, and won 13 caps for Jamaica.
The 52-year-old, a former Jamaica team-mate of Byfield, later managed Guyana’s national side. He had a brief caretaker spell at Notts County in 2009, coached their youth teams, then worked with Cardiff City under-21s and within the FA’s England youth set-up.
