Darren Byfield says Walsall will assess Priestley Farquharson, Brandon Comley and Jamille Matt before Saturday’s trip to Colchester United.

As reported by ExpressAndStar.com, Farquharson and Matt returned to training earlier this week after knee issues, while Comley missed the 2-1 win over Newport County last weekend due to fatigue. Byfield said all three have trained and will be assessed on Friday, adding their workloads are behind the rest of the squad. He has not ruled them out for the weekend.

Club captain Matt has missed the past three games, and last started in the 2-2 draw at Chesterfield on January 31 when he was substituted at half-time. The 36-year-old has scored three goals this season and has made four substitute appearances across Walsall’s last 10 league matches.

Farquharson sat out the back-to-back home fixtures against Cambridge United and Newport because of knee swelling. The defender started the 3-0 victory at Crewe Alexandra just over a fortnight ago in Byfield’s first game as interim manager, and has scored five goals and set up one more in 32 appearances in all competitions.

Comley began Byfield’s first two games in charge but was rested for the Newport win as the interim manager looks to keep players fresh for the final seven fixtures. In other team news, Daniel Kanu is on international duty and the rest of the group is unchanged.
