AS Monaco had an eventful trip north to Brugge to face Club Brugge in their Champions League debut, with their flight making for unusual scenes. On-loan Barcelona forward Ansu Fati was among them, and made his debut for Les Monegasques.

In footage put on social media by defender Jordan Teze, Monaco’s players had stripped down to their underwear, as explained by TalkSport. That included Fati, during strange scenes on the airplane.

AS Monaco manager explains incident

Monaco were flying to Belgium for their tie with Club Brugge, but the flight was grounded due to a problem with the air conditioning on the flight. Manager Adi Hutter explained the amusing situation.

“For technical reasons, it was impossible to travel, as everyone’s safety was not guaranteed. That’s why we decided, in agreement with (AS Monaco CEO) Thiago Scuro, to postpone our trip.”

“Unfortunately, we were unable to leave today. I don’t know if this setback will have an impact, as we are professionals and have immediately changed our schedule. We will therefore travel to Bruges tomorrow [Thursday]. Which is the best possible solution, especially since we already did so for the match in Auxerre on Saturday by travelling the same day.”

Ansu Fati’s AS Monaco debut

It was less amusing for AS Monaco on the day of the game, as they suffered a damaging 4-1 defeat to Club Brugge. There was a silver lining for Fati though, who made his Monaco debut after going through a fitness programme to get him back in shape. The 22-year-old came on for the final 27 minutes, with the game already seemingly beyond Monaco at 3-0. The gap was widened, but in stoppage time, Fati grabbed a goal on his debut, firing home well from a nice lay off by Takumi Minamino.

Fati his hoping to get back rhythm and confidence this season, after joining Monaco on loan from Barcelona. Monaco have an €11m buy option, but Barcelona also have a buyback clause.
