All signs point to Marcus Rashford leaving Manchester United, one way or another, during the summer. At this time of year it can be hard to find what actually has a chance of happening among a sea of rumors and 'reports' that do not have any validity.
Either way, what's known is that the England international is playing well under Unai Emery, and the already strong demand from other clubs for his services is only increasing. While his staying at Villa seems to be the most straightforward option, the Daily Star suggests that a more involved twist could come to fruition.
The media outlet reports that Man Utd are suggesting a swap. Their proposal, according to the tabloid newspaper, would see Ollie Watkins go to Manchester and Rashford stay in Birmingham on a long-term basis. Setting aside the financials and how doable something like this would be for now. From an on-pitch aspect, this move would not make sense.
Again, sticking only with what Emery has expressed and shown through his lineup changes, his plans involve incorporating both forwards for the foreseeable future with the club. Despite the complaints and fantasy managers who would love to see otherwise, Villa are ahead of the curve in this aspect.
Between the increasing matches and ever-condensing schedule, players suiting up and playing a full 90 in every match isn't a sustainable option for anyone anymore. Teams truly need quality throughout the lineup and good backup options.
Others may mock the 'starting 22,' but this is what's best for clubs like Villa, who plan to make more deep runs in the FA Cup and Champions League moving forward while contending for a top position in the Premier League standings.
Add that Emery has expressed the desire to implement a two-striker system with Watkins and Rashford. From Villa's perspective, this move would not make any sense whatsoever.
Maybe Man Utd will find a different home for Rashford and a deal they end up liking better. In the past, he's been linked to Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, for example. As Paul Gascoigne said in his interview with PokerScout, if that happens, "He’ll have had more moves than a chess player!"
