Wayne Rooney said Leeds United and their support were poor after the 0-0 draw with Brentford, as survival talk sharpened. Alan Shearer also set a modest points target he believes could keep them up.

Leeds failed to score for a fourth straight Premier League game, created no big chance and posted xG of 0.54, although another clean sheet arrived. According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Rooney said it was a hard watch and felt neither team nor crowd matched the stakes.

At Elland Road, tributes were paid to Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight, murdered in Istanbul almost 26 years ago. The mood swung between raucous and anxious, and Rooney argued the backing never truly lifted the side.

Leeds will be four points clear of the relegation zone when those games kick off and cannot drop below 16th by full-time. Tottenham host Nottingham Forest, while West Ham go to Aston Villa.

Shearer said that if you cannot win, you must not lose, and suggested the draw could be massive in context. With Wolves and Burnley still to visit, he thinks another four points will be enough for safety. He felt Leeds were short on quality at times and edgy in their decision-making.

Leeds will monitor this afternoon’s fixtures hoping rivals slip. After the March international break, they resume with an FA Cup quarter-final at West Ham on Sunday, April five.
