Going into their Champions League clash with Bayern Munich, Club Brugge had been realistic about what they would be up against. Head coach Nicky Hayen had used the word impossible to describe their chances, and it proved that way. Vincent Kompany’s side ran out 4-0 winners, a result that many expected ahead of the game. Bayern Munich ended the game with an xG of 4.2 and 26 shots on goal. Club Brugge on the other hand had an xG of just 0.25 and five shots, a truly dominant display from the Bundesliga side.
However, Club’s Champions League campaign is unlikely to be defined by this result. When the draw was made, this one was always seen as a turn up, try as hard as you can and then just forget about the score if you lose. Speaking after the game, central defender Brandon Mechele told the press ‘The difference in class was simply enormous. Maybe we should even be happy that it was ‘only’ 4-0. It could have been even more’.
For Kompany, it was a nice chance to remind his former employees Anderlecht that one of their biggest mistakes in recent seasons was letting him go after the side lost the cup final a few seasons ago. Since then, the former Manchester City defender has increased his reputation and is now winning trophies and playing attractive football with one of the biggest clubs in the world. Anderlecht, on the other hand, are not even in a European competition this season.
For Club, they now face another tough task when Barcelona visit the Jan Breydel in November. They will need to start stealing some points from some of the top teams however, with games against Arsenal, Sporting CP and Marseille still to come. One game they will have their eye on as a must win will be the clash with Kairat Almaty at the end of January.
Bayern Munich, on the other hand, now sit second in the Champions League with three wins from three, level with PSG, Inter, Arsenal and Real Madrid.
