Club Brugge are in Bergamo this evening to face Atalanta in the second match week of the Champions League. Last season, Club Brugge overcame Atalanta in the knock out stages of the competition by winning in Brugge and away from home in Italy. Despite not having Raphael Onyedika, head coach Nicky Hayen is confidence that his side can overcome an Atalanta side keen on revenge.

Speaking ahead of the game to HLN, Hayen said ‘They’ll be hungry for revenge after last season, we’re aware of that. We have to be prepared for a fierce start from them. But of course, we also believe in our own chances. If you dig in here, they have enough quality to exploit that. We know what to do to hurt them’. Hayen’s side started this competition with a fantastic 4-1 victory over Monaco at home. The Belgian side were far too good for their Ligue 1 opponents and completely dominated the game. They will certainly miss Onyedika in the central areas against Atalanta, but they are also catching the Bergamo based side in a period of transition. The side are adjusting to life without Gian Piero Gasperini, who left for Roma and has been replaced by former Southampton boss Ivan Juric.

Juric and his Atalanta side lost 4-0 in their opening game to PSG. Last weekend they drew 1-1 with Juventus, while Club Brugge beat Standard Liege 2-1.
