The pending deal to send Norwich City striker Josh Sargent to Toronto FC America’s MLS will, according to at least one journalist net Sargent’s former Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen a modest, yet signifiant, re-sale fee. Alex Crook reports that after Sargent completes his Toronto medical, a €19m sale shall be finalized. If the re-sale clause permits bonuses to be factored in as part of the overall package, Bremen will receive €1.3m immediately.

Josh Sargent very nearly returned to the Bundesliga

Wolfsburg actively pursued the 29-times-capped USMNT international this summer, ultimately withdrawing their interest when Norwich rejected a €19m bid that included bonuses. With the €19m base-transfer-fee to be received by the Canadian club, the Canaries have secured €3m more than Wolfsburg initially offered to bring the Missourian back to Germany.

Sargent’s soon-to-be-finalized sale will constitute a record MLS purchase. The 26-year-old will prove even more expensive than South Korean legend Song Seung-min, whom LAFC paid €22m to acquire from Tottenham this past August.

Werder Bremen hedged bets on Josh Sargent’s rise.

Bremen sold Sargent to Norwich for €9.5m in August of 2021 following their own Bundesliga relegation At the time, Sargent maintained an €8m estimated market value.

The American – slow to take flight in the German top division – eventually improved all aspects of his game and is now considered a €20m-valued striker.

Sargent has also scored five goals for country over the past four-and-a-half years.
