Werder Bremen are preparing for a possible Jens Stage exit and are considering VfL Wolfsburg’s Mattias Svanberg as his replacement, with Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung and DeichStube reporting interest in the 27-year-old.
The Sweden international midfielder is under contract until 2027, and Wolfsburg are interested in cashing in following their first-ever relegation. He has made 101 Bundesliga appearances across four seasons and featured in the relegation or promotion play-off defeat to Paderborn.
Werder will only look to progress if Stage’s transfer to TSG Hoffenheim materialises. They want more than €10 million for the 29-year-old after his 10-goal campaign.
Wolfsburg’s valuation of Svanberg has not been disclosed. Relegation combined with his contract leaves them in a weaker negotiating position.
Svanberg, formerly of Bologna, scored within seconds of his World Cup debut against Tunisia.
