It is fair to say that Lee Grant's time as Huddersfield Town manager did not go to plan.

After a spell as a coach at Ipswich Town, Grant was handed his first managerial role by Huddersfield in May, and he was given strong backing in the transfer market by owner Kevin Nagle as 14 new signings arrived at the Accu Stadium, including high-profile additions such as Ryan Ledson, Marcus Harness and Alfie May.

The Terriers were widely tipped to win the League One title after their impressive summer business, but an inconsistent first half of the season saw Grant come under increasing pressure from supporters.

Despite being sixth in the table at the time, Grant was sacked by Town last month following a four-game winless run, and he departed having won 17 of his 36 games in charge, drawing six and losing 13.

Just days after Grant's exit, he was replaced by former Bristol City and Norwich City boss Liam Manning, who has made a positive start to life at the Accu Stadium, winning four of his first eight games at the helm.

Grant broke his silence on his Huddersfield exit on Saturday when he appeared as a pundit on Sky Sports, admitting that he "would have loved to have been given the opportunity to continue the job", but he insisted that he had "full confidence" that the squad he built would go on to have a successful season.

When asked for his reaction to Grant's comments, FLW's Huddersfield Town fan pundit Graeme Rayner claimed that it was the right decision for the Terriers to part company with their former manager, and he suggested that his sacking should have happened much earlier.

"I'm sure Lee Grant will have wanted more time at Huddersfield," Graeme told FLW.

"I have no problem with him as a person, he seems like a very nice guy, he spoke well, but I think that the club made the right decision, and probably too late.

"They should probably have done it a few weeks before.

"I consider myself a pretty patient fan, and I arrived at the same conclusion as everybody else a lot later, probably in late November or early December.

"My view is that we were right to get rid of him, move him on and wish him luck for the future, but we probably should have done it a few weeks earlier and given Liam Manning more of the transfer window to shape the squad in his image.

"Although results in the last week or two have been a little patchy, overall in his time at the club, Manning has had a much more positive impact.

"I think fans can see the difference in how they approach the game, particularly with in-game changes and being quite pragmatic about tactics, which Lee Grant didn't have a great record with.

"He might go on and be successful elsewhere, and I wish him all the best, but I don't think he can really say he was hard done to, given the current climate and trend of clubs signing managers and cutting their losses early.

"You look at the likes of Thomas Frank, who haven't had an awful lot of time.

"We change our managers a lot, but we're not Nottingham Forest."

Vitor Pereira recently became Nottingham Forest's fourth manager of the season after the sackings of Nuno Espirito Santo, Ange Postecoglou and Sean Dyche, but while Huddersfield have not quite had that many changes in the dugout, they have had plenty of managerial turnover under Nagle.

Manning became the sixth permanent manager to have worked under Nagle in the last two-and-a-half years, but although it could be argued that some of the previous sackings have been harsh, it is difficult to make that claim when it comes to Grant.

The Terriers were in the play-off places at the time of Grant's departure, but there was little evidence that he was able to solve his side's inconsistency, and as he had one of the strongest squads in League One at his disposal, he certainly underachieved at the Accu Stadium.
