Wesley has been one of Roma’s key players this season, quickly earning Gasperini’s trust.
The Giallorossi coach has decided to reinvent him as a left-back, assigning him different roles than he had previously and making him a key player in his system.
The former Flamengo player is now preparing for his first World Cup with Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil.
During a press conference with the Seleção, the player recounted the journey that led him to develop under the Roma coach.
“At Flamengo, I was very attacking, but I played more on the right. So my job was more to get to the byline, make a cross, provide an assist, or something like that. Here at Roma, however, I’m playing to finish the play. That’s why I’ve worked a lot on this aspect, to get into the box and shoot, to do something different, because that’s exactly what Gasperini demands: attack, attack, attack.”
Wesley then expressed satisfaction with his performance in his first season with the Giallorossi, also recalling a target he set when he signed his contract: “So I’m very happy. The day I signed the contract, they asked me for six goals. I didn’t get to six only because I didn’t play the last game, so… But I’m very happy with everything that’s happening, with the goals I’ve scored, and I hope to double that number next season.”
