FLW's West Brom fan pundit has given his verdict on a potential permanent move for Samuel Iling-Junior
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Samuel Iling-Junior has made a positive start to life at West Brom since his loan deal from Aston Villa was agreed.
The winger got off the mark for the club in their 1-1 draw with Leicester City, scoring an impressive solo goal to give Ryan Mason’s side the lead at home.
After initially earning his first appearance as a substitute, he has since become a starter and could prove to be a key figure for the Baggies this season.
West Brom are aiming to earn promotion to the Premier League, while Iling-Junior has struggled to earn regular minutes with his parent club.
If he can continue this promising start and cement himself in Mason’s plans, then perhaps a permanent deal in the future could be on the cards.
When asked about a possible permanent move in the future, FLW’s West Brom fan pundit Callum Burgess made it clear that he’d be open to the idea if his performances remain at this level during his loan spell.
He also believes his lack of opportunities at Aston Villa could be a precursor to a permanent move away from the Premier League side, suggesting it’s a deal that might work out best for all parties.
“I think that if Iling-Junior keeps up his really good form that he’s displayed so far in an Albion shirt, I think that a permanent deal is something that Albion could end up considering,” Burgess told Football League World.
“Especially how it seems that he’s not really going to have much of a chance of breaking into the Aston Villa first team.
“But I think that there could be an opportunity there where, if he does spend the season at Albion and he continues his good form, it might feel that this is the perfect environment for him.
“He did of course go through a couple of loan spells last season at Bologna, then at Middlesbrough, and it might be the case that Albion is the home for him.
“So, I think that if Albion can get him at a decent price at the end of the season, then I think that it could be something that appeals to all parties.”
West Brom have made a promising start to the new Championship season, as they aim for a promotion fight under Mason.
The Baggies will be hoping that Iling-Junior can play a key role, with the Midlands outfit seeking a top flight return after their 2021 relegation.
Iling-Junior made 16 appearances in the Championship last year while on loan with Boro, contributing one goal and two assists.
It’s too early to say just yet whether a permanent move for Iling-Junior would be worthwhile for West Brom.
But he’s certainly made a strong first impression, particularly with the way he took his goal against Leicester.
If he can continue to perform at that level and score goals of that manner, then Mason will surely be keen to keep him around long-term.
