There was a lot of excitement when the Baggies brought in the midfielder on loan from Man Utd in the summer, in a deal that was seen as a coup for the club.

However, Collyer has had to be patient for opportunities, with most of his game time in the opening months of the campaign coming from the bench.

Ryan Mason confirms Toby Collyer injury issue for West Brom

But, he has started the past two games, with Collyer in the XI for the win against North End, and the 21-year-old put in a very impressive display, which included registering an assist for Mikey Johnston’s fantastic opener.

Yet, Collyer’s game was cut short as he was replaced in the 55th minute with an injury, with Albion then waiting to discover the extent of the problem.

And, in a fresh development, Mason has told the Express & Star that Collyer has picked up a hamstring issue, and whilst he wouldn’t confirm how long the player will be out, he isn’t going to be involved against Watford on Wednesday night.

Hopefully, it's not too bad. He had a few injuries at Man Utd last season in a similar area. He's a young boy, he's still growing, he's still developing, and we need to be aware of that. So, yes, the scan comes back, it's something that's going to keep him out, but hopefully not for too long.

We have the scan where we can work off but it's really important to treat the body, treat the symptoms and how the player feels. I don't like putting a timeframe on injuries because then that limits the mental side and the body's capacity to get back sooner.”

Toby Collyer injury is a frustrating setback for all parties

This is a shame for Collyer, as it’s clear he is a talented player, and, after waiting for his chance, he had started to look the part.

From the perspective of the midfielder, he would have wanted a run in the team, and it’s the same for Man Utd and Ruben Amorim, who sent Collyer out on loan to get regular minutes, and he had just forced his way into the XI on a regular basis.

But, these things happen in football, and Collyer will be focusing on his recovery and trying to get back into the side when he returns to full fitness.

For Mason, it’s a real shame that Collyer has picked up this injury as they prepare for a busy period in the fixture list, but Albion do have other options, and it’s now down to the boss to find the right formula as they try to make it back-to-back wins at Vicarage Road.
