FLW's West Brom fan pundit has given his verdict on Aune Heggebo's lack of goals for the team
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Aune Heggebo has yet to score for West Brom since arriving in the summer from Norwegian side Brann.
The forward has started all five league fixtures, and has provided one assist so far, but has been unable to find the back of the net himself.
The 1-0 loss to Derby County last Saturday has highlighted his lack of end product in the Championship so far, particularly with Josh Maja still only a substitute in Ryan Mason’s team.
The Nigeria international has come off the bench three times for West Brom this season, with the forward still working his way back up to full fitness after missing pre-season through injury.
When asked about Heggebo’s lack of goals, FLW’s West Brom fan pundit Callum Burgess claimed that it’s not too big of a concern given his creative input to the team.
He believes that it’s not about choosing one or the other between him and Maja, but finding a way to fit both into the starting lineup.
“I think there’s no doubting that part of Heggebo’s game that he does so well is his ability to lead the line, create chances for others,” Burgess told Football League World.
“We’ve not really seen him get into too many goal-scoring opportunities so far.
“I think, personally, I don’t think it’s a case of wanting Maja to come into the lineup to replace him, I think I’d rather see the two of them line up together.”
Burgess is optimistic that the pair could strike a strong partnership together, and it would help them get the best out of each other: “Because I think Heggebo playing off Maja would be really good to watch, and would help the two of them bring the best out of each other and would be the best for the team to try and solve any goal scoring issues we might be having.
“I think one solution might be to have those two together, Isaac Price on the wing as well as Mikey Johnston, Samuel Iling-Junior, whoever that may be.
“But, I think that Heggebo's time will come and that he’ll get better over time the more he progresses, but I think that I would like to see Maja integrated into the team sooner rather than later.
“But not at the risk of taking Heggebo out either.”
West Brom are fifth in the Championship table after just five fixtures, but have only scored six goals.
Maja was the Baggies’ top scorer last season, contributing 12 goals from 26 appearances in the division, with injuries hampering his availability.
Next up for Mason’s side is a trip to face top of the table Middlesbrough at the Riverside on 19 September in an 8pm Friday night kick-off.
Heggebo hasn’t been able to find the back of the net, which is a cause for some concern at West Brom after five games.
But if Maja can get back up to full fitness soon, then seeing the pair together could be quite interesting.
If Mason can find a way to make it work, then it could prove very fruitful for the Baggies, and give them a strong combination of creativity and finishing in their attack.
They still have great options out wide as well than can pose their own threat in the final third, so Maja’s fitness could be key to Albion scoring more consistently in the coming weeks.
