Tottenham Hotspur bounced back from their 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth last time out with an emphatic 3-0 win against London rivals West Ham United at the London Stadium.
Focus pre-match concentrated on Tottenham Hotspur’s high-profile deadline-day signing Xavi Simons, who was handed his Premier League debut. The Dutchman slotted straight into Thomas Frank’s side, looking impressively composed on the ball. That said, West Ham defended resolutely in the first half and managed to stifle Spurs’ attack.
The two sides entered the break level, with the match in need of a spark – and it arrived just two minutes after the restart. In the 47th minute, Simons’ inviting corner was crashed in by Pape Matar Sarr, who powered a header into the roof of the net. It was the Senegalese midfielder’s second goal of the season and gave the away side a crucial lead.
West Ham’s task was made even harder just seven minutes later as Tomáš Souček was sent off for a reckless sliding tackle on João Palhinha. His studs connected high on the shin of the Portuguese midfielder, and referee Jarred Gillett immediately pulled out a red card to send The Hammers a man down.
Spurs quickly capitalised on the numerical advantage as they doubled their lead just three minutes after Souček’s dismissal. Lucas Bergvall met Cristian Romero’s long ball forward with a perfectly timed header, guiding it into the net for his first Premier League goal.
Just when West Ham thought they had regained their bearings, Spurs struck again. In the 64th minute, another corner caused havoc in the box. The ball fell to Micky van de Ven, who blasted a right-footed shot from close range into the bottom corner. Three goals in 17 minutes had all but won the game for the visitors.
Graham Potter handed a debut to 20-year-old Soungoutou Magassa in the 62nd minute. The former Monaco defender provided some energy, but the hosts were unable to threaten Guglielmo Vicario’s goal. Frank’s side headed back to North London with three points, three goals, and plenty of cause for optimism.
Tottenham Hotspur are now second in the Premier League, whilst Potter’s side sit in relegation zone with his future at the club in question.
