West Ham have confirmed the appointment of former Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espírito Santo to replace the sacked Graham Potter.
The Hammers have endured a torrid start to the new season and Potter was finally relieved of his duties as fans pleaded for change, with the club accumulating just three points from their opening five Premier League matches.
Nuno himself was dismissed earlier this month after his tense relationship with Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis became public knowledge, despite guiding the club to the Europa League last season.
The Portuguese manager takes over at the London Stadium on a three-year deal with West Ham 19th, having lost four of their first five matches. The 51-year-old will be in the dugout as the Hammers make their first visit to Everton’s new stadium on Monday night.
In a statement following his appointment, Nuno said: “I am very pleased to be here and very proud to be representing West Ham United.
“My objective is to work hard to get the very best from the team and ensure that we are as competitive as we possibly can be. The work has already started and I am looking forward to the challenge that is ahead.”
The new boss took his first training session on Saturday morning after West Ham announced Potter’s dismissal from the club.
In a statement released on Saturday morning about the Englishman’s departure West Ham said: “Results and performances over the course of the second half of last season and the start of the 2025/26 season have not matched expectations, and the board of directors believe that a change is necessary in order to help improve the team’s position in the Premier League as soon as possible.”
Despite being sacked by Forest, Espirito Santo led the side into Europe for the first time in nearly 30 years and has done well previously as manager of Wolves guiding them into the Premier League and eventually to the quarter finals of the Europa League.
In the past the Portuguese manager has never been relegated from the Premier League but only time will tell whether he will be able to steer his new West Ham side clear of the relegation zone this season.
