West Ham United are accelerating their interest in Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi.

According to journalist Florian Plettenberg, the Hammers have opened talks with their Premier League rivals over a deal for the 27-year-old striker.

The Nigerian international has emerged as a potential solution for the Hammers as they look to strengthen their attacking options in the January transfer window.

Danny Ings is the only fit striker in the squad, leaving manager Graham Potter short on attacking options.

However, the English tactician has already shown his tactical flexibility by deploying Lucas Paqueta as a false nine in the 3-2 win over Fulham.

The Brazilian repaid his faith by netting the match-winner, but West Ham still need a prolific out-and-out striker to lead the line.

Awoniyi joined Forest in 2022 and made an immediate impact, playing a key role in helping the club maintain their Premier League status.

However, the past year has been less fruitful for the Nigerian striker, and his desire for regular playing time could facilitate a move to West Ham.

Awoniyi’s injury woes are the only real concern for West Ham

Awoniyi’s progress has stuttered over the past 12 months, and his injury woes have seen him fall down the pecking order.

Since his return from a lengthy lay-off, Awoniyi has been forced to play back-up to Chris Wood, who is leading Forest’s charge for Champions League football.

Awoniyi is a decent target for West Ham, but his recurring injury problems have made him unreliable.

If West Ham can find a way to keep him on the pitch, a run of games should allow him to recapture his goalscoring form.

Awoniyi could be an asset for the Hammers, but they should be wary of his injury record before paying a significant fee to sign him.
