West Ham United star El Hadji Malick Diouf might emerge on the wishlist of Manchester United for a left-back, according to The Athletic Manchester United correspondent Carl Anka.

The Red Devils are expected to target a player in the position ahead of next season with 30-year-old Luke Shaw approaching the twilight of his career.

Man United brought Paraguayan left-back Diego Leon to Old Trafford last summer but he has yet to make his official first-team debut and could be sent out on loan next term.

The Red Devils could look to bring in another player in the position in the summer, and Anka thinks Diouf could emerge as an option.

“I believe they have an LB longlist somewhere,” The Athletic journalist replied when asked if Man United are looking at a left-back for next summer.

“I have an idea of some players who might emerge on it, such as West Ham’s El Hadji Malick Diouf.

“I cannot say United are looking to sign a LB. Nor should you say United want to sign El Hadji Malick Diouf.”

Anka made it clear that the West Ham star is not on the radar of Man United and he is only suggesting he could become a target for the Red Devils.

The 21-year-old Senegal international has been in fine form since joining the Hammers from Slavia Prague last summer.

Diouf has five assists in 23 league appearances so far and was a key player as his country won the Africa Cup of Nations in January.

He has what it takes to play for Man United and some of the bigwigs are likely to be monitoring his situation ahead of the summer transfer window.

West Ham are in the relegation zone ahead of their final nine league games of the season.

They still have a huge chance of staying up as only a point separates them from 16th-place Tottenham Hotspur.

However, nothing is guaranteed yet and Diouf could be in demand if West Ham get relegated.

A move to Man United could appeal to the youngster if the Red Devils come calling, even if the Hammers stay up.
