Bunny Shaw scored twice as Women’s Super League champions Manchester City came back from two goals down against Chelsea to reach the final of the Women’s FA Cup final.
Shaw – who is out of contract this summer and whose future at the club has been much discussed in recent weeks – got one to force extra time after substitute Mary Fowler got one back, and then nodded home to secure a place at Wembley.
And after picking up the player of the match award, selected by former England goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis, Shaw spoke to broadcasters TNT Sports.
“After winning the league, we wanted to take another step and that’s getting to Wembley to try to win another [trophy],” she said in quotes transcribed by City’s official website.
“It was a very hard game, we stuck together as a team, and we grind, and that’s the result.
“I enjoy my time at Man City, and I always want to do the best that I can to get the club back to where it needs to go. Obviously, we won the league, and now we are one step closer to the FA Cup.”
On the subject of her equaliser, she said: “I trust myself, I know what I can do and when the ball popped up, one thing was on my mind, and it was put it on target.”
And of her winner, she added: “I had one just before that, and I missed it. I was thinking if I get another [chance], put it in the back of the net.”
City were again without Vivianne Miedema, unavailable due to personal reasons.
Head coach Andree Jeglertz had given minutes to several squad players throughout the competition, and that was again the case, with Khiara Keating in goal, and Grace Clinton and Laura Blindkilde Brown both coming in to midfield. Leila Ouahabi was added to the backline in place of Rebecca Knaak.
Lioness Lauren Hemp picked up a nasty knock to the face when she collided with Ouahabi at the start of the second half.
