Leeds-born Erling Haaland and Norway face England in a World Cup quarter-final in Miami tonight at 10pm for a place in the last four. According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Thomas Tuchel’s Three Lions await as the striker’s admiration for Leeds United again comes into view.

Born in the city in July 2000 during Alf-Inge Haaland’s spell with the Whites, he could have represented England. His attachment to Leeds has been evident ever since.

While at RB Salzburg he described his dream as winning the Premier League with Leeds and aimed to surpass his father’s international tally. With 54 caps and 62 goals, he has already done so and is third in the World Cup Golden Boot race on 7, one behind Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe.

For Manchester City he has scored three times against Leeds. After his brace in a 3-1 win at Elland Road in 2022, he kept celebrations muted out of respect, spoke of family in the stands and recalled childhood shirts bearing Eirik Bakke and his father.

In January’s Champions League he appeared to give a Leeds salute after a deft chip against Galatasaray, almost 26 years on from the tragedy in Istanbul in April 2000 when Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight were fatally stabbed. The clip was shared by TNT Sports and drew praise from fans.

Collecting his FA Cup winners’ medal in May, he responded to a Leeds chant with the til we die refrain. Former Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips has said Haaland is a massive fan of the club.
