Marseille’s English centre-back CJ Egan-Riley (23) has been one of the more perplexing mystery’s of Les Phocéens season. The former Burnley man hasn’t featured for Les Olympiens since a Coupe de France tie against amateur side Bayeux back on 13th January, and with nine matches to the end of the season, the England U21 international has made 12 appearances – mostly off the bench and at the beginning of the season. Speaking at a press conference attended by Get French Football News, Marseille manager Habib Beye gave an update on the Englishman – saying he was pleased with what he has showed in training since his arrival. “What does he need to do? In training, nothing more. Because he’s a very committed and focused lad who wants to succeed here. He hasn’t played a long time but he is a player than can give us possibilities: he can play on the left or right in a back four, or anywhere in a back three. He has personality and impact in the first phase of play,” Beye said on Thursday afternoon.“However, as I told him, he hasn’t played for a long time, so we need to get him back to fitness so that he can play a full 90 minutes. (…) I‘ve said it before: everyone has a role to play.““I’m counting on everyone. We’ve reset the clock, and training will determine my starting eleven and my squad. Meritocracy must come first; there is no status here. For now, I’m happy with the response from the players and CJ.”GFFN | George Boxall – reporting from La Commanderie, Marseille.
