Enzo Maresca has just spoken to TNT Sports after Chelsea’s draw with Bournemouth, and he denied flatly that a draw was a fair result.

His captain Reece James, who came onto the pitch in the second half and scored the equaliser with an injury time free kick, agreed:

“To be honest, I don’t [think a point was fair],” James said.

“We had a few clear-cut chances that we should have taken in the first-half and put the game to bed. But if you don’t take chances, sometimes that can come back to bite you in the arse.”

“I think it’s across football; it’s globally. If you have chances in a game and you don’t take them, it could come back to hurt you.”

The question is this – does missing chances mean you deserve to win the game?

Speaking to 5 Live, he really backed his team to still make the top 4 despite their winless run:

“I think it is realistic if you look at how we play. When we have played against the top teams we don’t shy away. We take it one game at a time and see where we will end up at the end of the season.”

James happy to be back to scoring ways

Reece James smashes in a free kick to equalise.

James was at least happy to be back playing and scoring. As he pointed out, when he played regularly he scored regularly. So it must have been a special moment for him, and he talked the interviewer through how he decided to take the free kick low and to the far post:

“I knew the free-kick was shooting distance. It felt like that side of the goal was open, so I tried to finish it as well as I could.

“There was a period that I was scoring quite frequently but I haven’t had that feeling in a quite a long time through injuries and setbacks. I’m happy to be back with the team and happy to get back on the score sheet again and help the team.”

If we can take anything from a disappointing result, it was getting Reece back and seeing the joy on his face as he scored.
