West Ham United received a huge relegation boost as rivals Tottenham Hotspur were held to a 1-1 draw by Leeds United on Monday.

Mathys Tel broke the deadlock early in the second half with a spectacular 20-yard strike.

The 21-year-old then turned from hero to villain 16 minutes from time when he caught Ethan Ampadu in the face with a reckless bicycle kick inside the area.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin converted the resulting spot-kick to level the scores.

Antonin Kinsky denied Sean Longstaff’s stoppage-time strike, as the two sides played out a 1-1 draw at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

What this result mean for West Ham?

Tottenham were on course to pick up maximum points against Leeds after Tel’s wonderful 50th-minute opener.

But Calvert-Lewin’s penalty goal kept the relegation battle very much alive for the Hammers.

Tottenham victory meant West Ham would need to win their remaining two matches, while hoping their rivals secure no more than one point from their last two fixtures.

Given Spurs’ superior goal difference, the Irons would suffer relegation if both sides finish level on points.

Monday’s draw leaves West Ham now just a win away from 17th, with the current gap only two points between the two sides.

West Ham will travel to Newcastle United on Sunday, while Tottenham face a tricky away fixture at Chelsea on Tuesday.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side won the reverse fixture against Newcastle, who have won just one of their last six league matches.

Meanwhile, Tottenham haven’t won at Stamford Bridge since 2018.
