Gerhard Struber has done a brilliant job since his arrival this summer, and the victory against the relegated Saints side kept the team in the play-off places, with the Robins having only lost two of their opening 11 league games under the new boss.

Whilst it has been a real collective effort, Vyner has been one of the standouts for Bristol City, with Struber describing the 28-year-old as an ‘outstanding’ player.

Zak Vyner faces an uncertain future at Bristol City

Despite his importance to the team, there are major doubts about Vyner’s future, as his current deal at Ashton Gate is set to expire in the summer of 2026, so there is a real risk that he could walk away from the club on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Whilst technical director Brian Tinnion confirmed that a new contract is on the table for the academy graduate, there will be speculation surrounding Vyner until a decision is made.

Even though negotiations are ongoing in the background, it’s fair to say that Bristol City fans are adamant that the club need to do all they can to ensure Vyner puts pen to paper.

That message was relayed to the club on social media as Vyner discussed the win over Southampton, on the night he became the club's Championship appearance record maker...

Another made it clear that Bristol City should be prepared to pay big to keep Vyner at the club.

Those sentiments were echoed by another fan, who outlined how important it is to retain the versatile Vyner.

One fan kept it simple as he urged Vyner to 'sign the contract'.

Zak Vyner will be loving life at Bristol City as they push on under Gerhard Struber

Obviously, we don't know how talks are going between Vyner, his representatives and the club, and both sides will be looking for the right deal on their terms.

However, strictly from a football perspective, it's clear that Vyner is loving his football right now. He has become a key figure under Struber, and his athleticism and quality have made him ideally suited to the way the ex-Barnsley chief wants to play.

He hasn't missed a minute this season, and whilst Vyner may have been a player that divided opinion over the years, he has flourished under Struber, with the former Aberdeen loanee having seemingly embraced that responsibility, and he has emerged as a leader in this impressive side.

Struber's comments show that he is also very appreciative of Vyner, so all parties will be delighted at how this season is going, and Vyner will know that he may not get that love elsewhere if he does move on.

So, he is clearly going to have a big decision to make about his future, and it will be a major blow for Bristol City if he does depart, as not only are they losing a good player, they will also not get a fee for someone who could fetch a decent sum.

Ultimately, this will play out over the next weeks and months, but the only priority for Vyner right now is helping Bristol City as they look to kick-on under Struber, and there will be a belief in the dressing room that promotion is a possibility when you see how they have played.
