Birmingham City striker Kyogo Furuhashi is set for a shock Celtic return

Birmingham City are set to offload Kyogo Furuashi after just six months in a shock transfer twist, with a return to Scottish giants Celtic lined up for the misfiring Japanese forward.

As reported by SunSport, Kyogo is poised to be swiftly on his way back to Celtic on a temporary basis following a dismal start to his career at St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park.

Earlier this week, Football League World exclusively revealed that Birmingham intend on sanctioning seven more departures throughout the course of this month's transfer window following the termination of Eiran Cashin's loan from Brighton and Hove Albion, with the likes of Lyndon Dykes, Alfons Sampsted and Willum Thor Willumsson potentially set to leave Chris Davies' side.

Kyogo's impending exit, however, may come as a surprise to Bluenoses in spite of his woes infront of goals since signing for the club in an eye-catching reported £10 million deal from Rennes last summer.

The ex-Celtic star is yet to score from 23 Championship appearances, seven of which have been starts, with his sole strike coming in a 2-1 EFL Cup victory over Sheffield United all the way back in August.

When Kyogo could feature for Celtic FC amid shock Birmingham City transfer exit news

SunSport's aforementioned report claims that a deal is set to be completed quickly ahead of an impending return to Parkhead for Kyogo, who could make his second Celtic debut in Saturday's home clash against Dundee United.

Martin O'Neill is reportedly desperate to bolster the Hoops' attacking options after returning to the club as Wilfried Nancy's replacement until the end of the campaign, with Celtic having struggled to continue their domestic dominance this term.

Celtic, who are currently positioned third in the league standings behind Hearts and fierce Old Firm rivals Rangers, have been spending the last 24 hours exploring the terms of a potential deal and now appear to have made a significant breakthrough.

All seems set for Kyogo to return to the club where he plundered home 86 goals from 167 appearances across a trophy-laden three-and-a-half-year spell, which saw the 23-cap Japanese international help the giants to two Scottish Cups, three League Cups and three league titles prior to his ill-fated switch to Rennes last January.

Kyogo's brief time at Rennes proved a disaster as he failed to find the back of the net from six outings before jetting back over to the British Isles to arrive as one of Birmingham's most hotly-anticipated summer recruits, but similar struggles have been endured.

Birmingham City will need to replace Kyogo as Celtic FC return nears

Kyogo simply hasn't delivered for Birmingham, with the 30-year-old spurning many high-profile opportunities to open his account in what has shaped up to be an underwhelming deal for all parties.

Blues' key decision-makers now appear to have had enough with Kyogo, and supporters may hope that Celtic will be paying a significant part of what one can reasonably assume will be a rather-healthy pay-packet in the Second City.

But it's a surprising twist nonetheless, and while Birmingham's decision to offload Kyogo does make sense, it's important that the club source an adequate replacement for the Celtic-bound forward.

Kyogo's profile is different to anything else that Davies has in his camp at this moment in time, and it would be no surprise to see Blues make moves for a pacey striker capable of running in behind and stretching defences in the coming days and weeks.
