Galatasaray are aiming to end a 12-year wait for Champions League knockout football despite back-to-back defeats. Atletico Madrid visit Istanbul before a trip to Manchester City, and one win across those fixtures could be enough, though bookmakers still do not fancy Gala to win the tournament and needing a result at the Etihad may be problematic.
According to Turkish-Football.com, this campaign has included a 1-0 victory over pre-tournament favourites Liverpool, further wins against Bodo/Glimt and a 3-0 triumph at Ajax, before setbacks against Union Saint-Gilloise and Monaco.
The last time Gala advanced beyond the groups was 2013/14. After a 6-1 home loss to Real Madrid featuring a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick, Roberto Mancini arrived. A late 1-0 victory over Juventus, Wesley Sneijder finishing from Didier Drogba’s lay-off, sealed progression.
Chelsea ended that run in the round of 16. Aurélien Chedjou earned a 1-1 draw in Istanbul, but Samuel Eto’o and Gary Cahill secured a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge in the return.
A year earlier, Galatasaray reached the quarter-finals. They edged Schalke in the last 16 with Umut Bulut’s 95th-minute winner in Gelsenkirchen, before Real Madrid advanced 5-3 on aggregate despite a 3-2 defeat in Istanbul.
