Premier League legend feels he has been scapegoated for Reds’ poor form
Clubs in the Saudi Pro League are reportedly ‘ready’ to fund a move for wantaway Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah.
The Egyptian has fallen out of favour at Liverpool of late and has been left out of Arne Slot’s starting XI for the past three matches.
He gave a stunning interview after he was left on the bench for the duration of the Reds’ 3-3 draw with Leeds, Salah threatened to leave the club after AFCON, revealing he felt he had been unfairly scapegoated for the club’s poor results and that his relationship with Slot had broken down.
Should Salah look to engineer a transfer in January, though, potential destinations would be few and far between.
Salah, now 33 years old, signed a new two-year deal with the club in April, and is thought to be earning a salary of around £400,000 per week.
As such, it is believed that few clubs in world football would be able to afford to pry him away from Anfield.
The Telegraph reported this week, however, that clubs in the Saudi Pro League were prepared to fund a big-money move for the Egyptian.
He was heavily linked with an SPL transfer last spring - namely to Al Hilal - as he was left in a state of flux awaiting a new contract, which he ultimately signed.
Al Ittihad also lodged an offer for his services in 2023.
That interest has not gone away, though it remains to be seen whether a deal could be put together in January.
Given his popularity among Arab football fans, Salah is thought to fit the SPL’s profile. With a variety of current stars coming to the end of their contracts, a wave of new investment in star talent is expected.
Any January negotiations could be complicated by Salah’s involvement at AFCON. He will join up with Egypt’s camp on December 15, and could remain with the Pharaohs as late as January 18.
Salah himself has revealed that his move to Saudi Arabia “would have happened” had he failed to agree new terms with Liverpool.
Speaking to Egyptian broadcaster ON Sport in May, he said: “My relations with SPL officials are very good, we talked a lot and the negotiations were serious. It was a good opportunity to me, if I hadn’t renewed with Liverpool it would have happened.”
